This etching is the work of Utagawa Kunisada, a Japanese artist who belonged to the ikuyo-e current ('paintings of the floating world'), similar to his contemporaries Hokusai and Hiroshige. Even though he was specialised in paintings of the kabuki theatre actors, he also painted landscapes and warriors, as in this work entitled Samurai passing the river on horse.
